Google to enlist NSA to help it ward off cyberattacks

The world’s largest Internet search company and the world’s most powerful electronic surveillance organization are teaming up in the name of cybersecurity.

Under an agreement that is still being finalized, the National Security Agency would help Google analyze a major corporate espionage attack that the firm said originated in China and targeted its computer networks, according to cybersecurity experts familiar with the matter. The objective is to better defend Google — and its users — from future attack.

How Much Will That iPad Really Cost You?

Amplifyd from online.wsj.com

What Apple’s iPad Means for Your Wallet

LONDON—Phew! Thank heavens the iPad is coming. Solving the economic crisis should be a breeze—it has an app for that.

Apple’s new all-singing, all-dancing hand-held computer is the talk of the moment. Even thousands of miles away in London, when I staggered off the redeye Thursday morning, the front pages showed a gaunt but grinning Steve Jobs clasping his latest creation.

But if we can hack our way through the hype, what are the financial implications of this latest techno marvel—for consumers and for investors?

Look out: The iPad may cost you around $1,000 after all.

AT&T to Boost Network Investment as Apple Shows Confiendence in Partnership w/ iPad

Amplifyd from online.wsj.com

AT&T, Boosted And Stressed By iPhone, Lays Out Network Plans

AT&T Inc. detailed its plans for beefing up its often-maligned network Thursday, just one day after being tapped to carry another closely watched Apple Inc. device that will likely add even more traffic to its airwaves.

The carrier’s attention to network issues reflects its deep reliance on the iPhone for growth.

Apple gave AT&T an important vote of confidence Wednesday by making it the carrier for the new iPad, but the consumer electronics company made clear earlier in the week that it is carefully monitoring AT&T’s plans for improving its network.

In 2009, AT&T put up about 1,900 new cell sites, opened new spectrum frequencies and upgraded their equipment to a faster wireless technology, he added. This year, the carrier plans to spend $18 billion to $19 billion on its networks, including spending twice as much on the wireless network as it did last year.

Oracle to Set To Evolve with Sun Acquisition

Amplifyd from online.wsj.com

CEO Ellison Sets New Course as Oracle Gains Control of Sun

Larry Ellison is setting a new course for Oracle Corp. that includes hiring 2,000 sales and engineering employees and developing a line of high-end computer systems.

The moves, which the Oracle chief executive disclosed in an interview Tuesday, come as the company prepares to close its long-delayed acquisition of computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc. On Tuesday Sun delisted itself from the Nasdaq Stock Market, a sign that the takeover was nearly complete, though no formal announcement was made.

With the acquisition, Mr. Ellison, who built his fortune selling computer software and shunning hardware, says Oracle’s mission will change significantly. He said he plans to transform Oracle into a company that is as serious about server systems—the big back-office computers used for processing corporate data—as it is about business software.

Google Founders to Cede Majority Control

Amplifyd from www.ft.com

Google’s founders to give up control

Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page disclosed on Friday that they plan to give up their majority control of the internet group over the next five years.

Their planned stock sales, revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, will mark a highly symbolic end to their formal control over the company they founded in their Stanford University dorm room 11 years ago.

However, for all practical purposes they will still be in a position to call the shots at Google on important matters, since they will still speak for 48 per cent of the voting rights at the company between them.

IE Security Hole Has Governments Recommending Browser Switch

Amplifyd from online.wsj.com

Microsoft Scrambles to Patch Browser

Microsoft Corp. raced to release a fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer Web browser as the company sought to contain the fallout from governments urging users to switch to competing software.

The Redmond, Wash., company said it plans to issue a software update for Internet Explorer on Thursday to patch a security vulnerability first reported last week that could allow hackers to take over a computer that visits Web sites loaded with malicious code. While Internet Explorer has suffered numerous security vulnerabilities over the years, the latest flaw is especially high-profile because it is believed to have been used in attacks on Google Inc. and other companies that Google linked to China.

New Report Highlights House Republicans’ Domination of Twitter

A report out last week, “Twongress: The Power of Twitter in Congress” found that, contrary to the narrative of the last few years, it’s the Republicans in the House of Representatives who are dominating Twitter.  The report found that:

More Republicans Use Twitter Than Democrats - In Congress, there are 132 members who are using Twitter actively: 89 Republicans and 43 Democrats. In the Senate, there is nearly an even split, with 14 Republicans using Twitter compared to 11 Democrats. But in the House, there are 75 Republicans using Twitter (42.13 percent of the Republican Caucus) and 32 Democrats (12.45 percent of the Democratic Caucus).

Silicon Valley Questions Wisdom of Google-China Confrontation

Amplifyd from www.ft.com

Silicon Valley questions Google stance

However, that popular groundswell of support has run into a pragmatism that has left the company looking isolated even in its own northern Californian back yard.

With China rapidly turning into one of the tech industry’s main markets, few business leaders or financiers show any interest in rocking the boat.

“At the end of the day, market size and economics dictate,” said Rajiv Dutta, a former top executive at Ebay and now a partner at Elevation Partners, one of the Valley’s biggest private equity investors. Most technology companies sell products and services to China that do not force them to take decisions about personal privacy and censorship every day and will not change course, he said.s

That pragmatism is also drawing questions at home about Google’s wisdom in opting for such public confrontation.

FCC looks at ways to assert authority over Web access

The Federal Communications Commission is considering aggressive moves to stake out its authority to oversee consumer access to the Internet, as a recent court hearing and industry opposition have cast doubt on its power over Web service providers.

The FCC, which regulates public access to telephone and television services, has been working to claim the same role for the Internet. The stakes are high, as the Obama administration pushes an agenda of open broadband access for all and big corporations work to protect their enormous investments in a new and powerful medium.
