Google Wave, Confusing?

Any Wavers Out There? What are your thoughts on this new communications platform?

Google Wave (Not) For Dummies

Google Wave is a powerful, exciting, versatile tool, but you’re not alone if you can’t get your head around what it does, said Gina Trapani, the former editor of Gawker Media blog Lifehacker.

Despite earlier comparisons between Google Wave and email programs, a better way to think of it is as a new way of collaborating on documents, Ms. Trapani said. The service lets users edit and talk about one document in one place, so there aren’t different versions and copies moving back and forth over email.

“Editing a Word document is a very different activity than answering your email , and Wave conflates those two things into a single workspace,” she said.

It’s particularly useful for small project teams, Ms. Trapani said, noting that she tried this herself, on a team writing the manuscript for “The Complete Guide to Google Wave” in six weeks.

It’ll be much better once it’s integrated with Gmail, and Google Voice. Then and always on app will become available, and Wave’s popularity will explode. Until then… not so much.

This clip helped clarify a little…but just a little. I tend to agree with @steve that once bundled into Google apps its value will likely better present itself. Still, people are finding it very difficult to understand. Think they would be wise to take a page out of Apple’s book and simplify communication; their 80 minute video introduction certainly won’t help ;)
